How to Tackle PSLE Vocabulary Cloze Questions
A step-by-step approach to reading for context and avoiding wrong-answer traps
Vocabulary Cloze looks deceptively simple. Your child reads a short passage with 5 blanks and picks the best answer from 4 multiple-choice options for each.
Yet, a surprising number of primary school students lose marks here. The issue is rarely a lack of vocabulary. Instead, children lose marks because they rush, guess based on what "sounds right," or miss subtle clues in the sentence.
Why PSLE Vocabulary Cloze Is Tricky
- Distractor traps: Examiners place words with very similar meanings in the options. A general guess usually leads to the wrong choice.
- Context clues come later: The clue needed to solve a blank is often hidden after the blank, further down the paragraph.
- The "sounds okay" trap: Children often pick the first word that seems okay without reading the rest of the sentence.
The 4-Step Method for Home Practice
- Read the whole passage first (underlined word included). Do not choose any options yet. Reading the entire text gives your child the big picture and overall plot.
- Cover the options and hunt for clues. Have your child cover choices (1) to (4) with their hand. Ask them to underline key context clues right before and after the blank.
- Eliminate near-miss options. Uncover the options. Cross out choices that fail on meaning, tone, or grammar (e.g., wrong part of speech or tense).
- Re-read the completed passage. Once all 5 answers are selected, read the full text again from start to finish. This catches errors that only show up in the overall story flow.
3 Quick Habits to Build PSLE Vocabulary
Rote-memorising long word lists rarely sticks. Words are remembered best when seen in context.
- Read high-quality materials: Encourage your child to read news articles, magazines, or storybooks alongside assessment books.
- Keep a "Word Bank" notebook: When reading, have your child jot down 1 or 2 new words a day. Look up definitions together.
- Do 5-minute timed drills: Vocabulary Cloze is an exam skill. Doing 1 passage (5 questions) every few days builds exam instinct much faster than cramming.
