Bread has a rich history that reaches back at least 30 000 years. Historically, the first bread (1) made from roasted cereal grains and water, which was then made into a "grain-paste" and cooked. This flatbread still has a legacy in many parts of the world (2) similar items are still made today. In Mexico, tortillas are descendants of this flatbread. The Indian chappati, Armenian lavishes, Scottish oatcakes and North American johnnycakes are too. Clearly, flatbread is still prevalent in many varieties (3) the world!

Flatbread was a huge part of Sumerian diets. Sumerians made a flat cake (4) barley. Another flatbread variant, known as "ta", was eaten in Egypt in the 12th century BC. In ancient Greek, a variety of flatbread, consisting of flour and oil, was offered as a tribute (5) the gods.

The consumption of bread was vital to the formation of the earliest human societies. As farming replaced hunting, groups of people were forced to settle down. The need to harvest grains (6) a yearly basis led to the development of settlements and towns. In the Middle Ages, a large loaf of bread was used to set the table and would be used as a "plate". If you are familiar with the saying "The best thing since sliced bread", it was Otto Frederick Rohwedder (9) invented the slicing machine for bread in 1928. Since his machine both sliced and wrapped the bread, maybe the saying should be "The best thing since sliced and wrapped bread".

Today, bread is still just as popular (10) it was back in the day and is a staple in many homes. Sadly though, technological advances have allowed bread to become mass-produced to such an extent that it has lost nearly all its nutritional qualities.
