For each question, choose the word closest in meaning to the underlined word(s).

Tom was known for thinking only of himself. Whenever his classmates shared their snacks or offered to help him, he would accept their kindness – without ever returning the favour. His grandmother often reminded him that kindness should be (1) reciprocal and not taken for granted, but Tom paid little attention.

One afternoon, Tom was (2) encouraged by his teacher to stay behind after school to help decorate the hall for Friendship Day. Thinking it would be boring, he refused and left school instead. A few days later, Tom realised that he had left his project file on a bus. Panic filled his heart as the project was due that morning. He searched everywhere but could not find it. Feeling (3) lost, he sat quietly at his desk, unsure of what to do.

To his surprise, several classmates offered to help. One shared his notes while another explained his (4) predicament to the teacher. Their willingness to help left Tom deeply touched.

That afternoon, Tom reflected on what had happened. He realised that others had always shown him kindness, but he had (5) seldom done the same. Feeling ashamed, he vowed to change his behaviour from that day onwards.
