In sunny Singapore, cold treats are always welcome as a respite. They provide momentary relief (1) the heat. A familiar one that excites both the young (2) old is the ice cream sandwich. The way it is served makes the ice cream sandwich stand (3) from other icy treats.
Instead of stacking scoops of ice cream in a cup or cone, a vendor affectionately known as “ice cream uncle” (4) slice a portion from a much larger block. Almost (7) iconic as the frozen snacks that they sell are the “ice cream uncles” themselves. In 2019, news reports stated that there were only (8) 200 street hawkers selling ice cream. The authorities began handing out official street hawking licenses to these vendors in 1994, (9) many of them had already been selling ice cream for years by then.
