Last month, our school organised an inclusive Singapore Innovation Competiton. Teams were asked to study the challenges faced by different groups in public spaces and present (1) strategies to address them.Before their research, pupils were (2) explicitly reminded to observe respectfully and avoid making assumptions about others’ needs. One group focused on crowded hawker centres, where elderly patrons sometimes (3) encountered difficulties finding seats or reading small menu signs. The pupils suggested larger menu guides and reminder posters to encourage diners to offer seats to those in need. During the presentation, they explained why their suggestions were (4) viable, as the materials could be designed in school. The facilitators reminded participants that thoughtful actions could (5) alleviate everyday difficulties, leaving pupils determined to make a difference. By the end of the event, many pupils realised that small acts could make Singapore more welcoming for everyone.
